In the Women’s section Russia is still leading with 18 points, even after losing to Ukraine today. China didn’t take the chance to get closer as they only drew against Spain. In the last round the most interesting match is Ukraine – China. Both teams have 17 points and it means they have theoretical chances for the gold. However, according to the tiebreak rules, it’s enough for Russia to draw against Bulgaria to secure first place. The fight for the bronze medal is also not so clear. The only team with 16 points is Germany. If they manage to beat Georgia in the last round everything depends on the Ukraine – China match.

The Open section keeps being more complicated. There are 10 teams with a mathematical chance for a medal! China is the clear leader with 17 points. Their opponent for the last round, Poland, has very small chances for third place, depending on the other results. The match between Hungary and Ukraine is very important. If Hungary wins, they will end up at least in second place. With another result nothing is clear.

All other decisive matches are also very equal. Russia is not doing well so far, but France can’t be satisfied with the pairings, which have the two teams play against each other in the last round. Azerbaijan is playing against USA after some very tough matches. The most unexpected pretenders for the podium, India and Uzbekistan, are facing each other on the fifth board. The rest day gives everyone a chance to prepare fully for the last round. It is going to be an extremely interesting fight!

Round 5 of the Chess Olympiad brought a lot of changes in the standings. There are seven teams sharing first place in the open section. With four wins and one draw Azerbaijan has the best tiebreak. The rest of leaders are quite unexpected: Serbia, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Cuba, Uzbekistan and Georgia. The biggest surprise of the last round was Uzbekistan beating Ukraine 2.5 – 1.5. Top rated Russia didn’t manage to overcome the Bulgarians and they are only in 8th place before the rest day. Surprisingly, the other top rated teams are doing even worse so far. Armenia lost an important match against France, while USA and Ukraine both have one loss and one draw.

In the women’s section the situation is less complicated: China, Hungary and Russia won all their matches, while Netherlands, Poland and Serbia are sharing 4th-6th place with one draw and four wins.

It’s worth to mention some individual scores. There are only two players with 5 points out of five games – Deysi Cori from Peru (women’s section) and Valentin Iotov from Bulgaria (open section), who won today against Sergey Karjakin.

After the rest day we will for sure observe a lot of changes at the top of the standings and also a lot of unexpected results – it’s typical for the team events to bring many emotional games.

First surprises in Tromsø!

The Chess Olympiad is getting more and more interesting and we observe many exciting games on the top boards. There are 11 teams in the open section and 12 teams in the women’s section who all have won their first three matches. The biggest surprise so far was a draw between Ukraine and Norway 2 in the second round.

Round 3 of the open section brought some very equal matches in the top and five of them finished with 2-2. The most interesting results were France winning against Armenia and Holland beating USA (see below for a picture from this match with three world class players – Gata Kamsky, Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri). The hosts with Magnus Carlsen on the first board can’t be satisfied so far. They won with only 2.5-1.5 against Yemen and then made four draws versus Finland. However, after winning in round 3 they are higher in the standings than Armenia and Ukraine. There are 8 rounds to go, so anything can happen. The next rounds will for sure bring more emotions and fascinating games. The most interesting match in round four is definitely France – Azerbaijan.

Thanks to the live broadcast of all the matches we can also observe the fight on the lower boards. I’m in Tromsø as the captain of the Maltese team. For me on of the more interesting bets on Chessbet.com therefore was if Malta or Cyprus will place higher in the final standings. So far both teams are doing well. Cyprus has two wins, Malta one win and one draw, but 2-2 against Yemen should be considered as a good result.

Every single match even on the last board might be interesting and inspiring. Every team has some aim and every player tries to get the best possible score. That makes the Olympiad the most interesting event of the year. Enjoy watching the games and don’t forget to bet!
